ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

FALL 2018

We are excited to announce our Fall 2018 Adult Sunday School classes, which have been designed around the “Way of Love” theme.  There is something for everyone: listening to our fellow parishioners tell compelling stories about their spiritual journeys, learning how to live our faith each day in an often difficult world, studying the Bible in an easy-to-follow, yet challenging, format, and joining seekers to discover more about our faith tradition.

All classes will be held in Lowndes Hall Christian Education Building.  Classrooms will be labeled with the name of the class being held there.  We hope you will join us!

Spiritual Journeys.  St. Alban’s Room, #14

Sundays, 9:30-10:15 am, Sept. 16-Dec. 16

Class Facilitator: Margie Netherton

The Spiritual Journeys class will focus on the challenges and adventures of a diverse group of parishioners as they share their stories of spiritual growth.  We plan to have St. Andrew’s members share stories related to faith and mental illness, adoption, social justice, grief, addiction/the twelve steps, fifty years of membership at St. Andrew’s, and more.  Each parishioner will speak for about thirty minutes with time for discussion at the end.  This class relates to the Way of Love practice of “Bless,” when people share their faith experiences and become witnesses to bless others.

Living Our Faith.  St. Gregory’s Room, #6

Sundays, 9:30-10:15 am, Sept. 16-Dec. 16

Class Facilitators: Heather and Doug Voran

The Living Our Faith class will use the “Work of the People” curriculum consisting of powerful videos and questions for meaningful class discussions.  Richard Rohr said that this curriculum “represents a new era of honest and wonder-filled Christianity, that is indeed of the people and not from the usual company men.”This fall we will first watch and discuss the series “Different But Not Divided,” which relates to the Way of Love practice of “Go,” when people cross political, religious, and social boundaries and listen deeply to each other.  We will learn how to use “Dignified Dialogue” to talk to people we strongly disagree with. Then we will watch and discuss “Recovery and Spirituality,” which relates to the Way of Love practice of “Rest,” when people make room for self-care and allow themselves to receive the gift of God’s peace and restoration. We will learn some spiritually-based practices helpful to anyone dealing with stress, busyness, or in any type of recovery.

Bible Study: The Path. St. Catherine’s Room, #3

Sundays, 9:30-10:15 am, Sept. 16-Dec. 16

Class Facilitators: Susan Willis, Laurie Cizon, and others to be announced

This Bible Study class will run for two twelve-week semesters. It will use “The Path: A Journey through the Bible” curriculum from Forward Movement Publishing, a ministry of the Episcopal Church. The Path is the story of the Bible in language that it is clear and easy to read. Walk in the footsteps of faithful men and women who have done their best to follow God's call. Follow the path of God's love all the way from the beginning to the end, from Adam's creation to John's revelation. The whole sweep of scripture in one year! An entry point for those who don't know where to start with the Bible or an exciting overview for those who have studied the Bible for years. This class relates to the Way of Love practice of “Learn,” when people reflect on Scripture.

Seekers and Newcomers.  St. Sophia’s Room, #2

Sundays 9:00-10:15 am, Sept. 16-Dec. 16

Class Facilitators: Father Robert Pace, Mother Jill Walters

St. Andrew’s Seekers & Newcomers Class is for anyone seeking God, desiring to grow in the Christian faith, and wishing to grow more in this beautiful and deeply spiritual faith tradition. We are open to everyone, whether you are brand new to church or are a long-time member. This is a “come and explore” opportunity, with no obligations placed on anyone who attends. At the end of this class, you may wish to be confirmed, baptized, received, or reaffirmed in the church.  This class relates to the Way of Love practices of “Worship,” “Learn,” and “Turn.”  In Worship, we gather in community to dwell on God through our faith tradition.  In Learn, we learn about our faith through Scripture and the Book of Common Prayer.  In Turn, we pause, listen, and choose to follow Jesus.
