7:30 PM Holy Week Maundy Thursday Holy Eucharist, Rite II
Thursday, March 29, 2018, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
In this service, we gather to recognize the great "commandment" (Maundy=mandatum in Latin, "to command), which is: "Love one another as I have loved you!" In the Gospel of John, just before Jesus departs for his crucifixion, he commands his disciples to love one another. And he demonstrates this love by washing their feet. In this service, we follow the liturgy for Maundy Thursday from the Book of Common Prayer. We gather and read the scriptures related to this commandment. Then, we come forward to the altar and wash one another's feet. After we have shared in the Holy Eucharist, the service concludes with the "stripping of the altar." All liturgical items on and around the altar are removed and members of the altar guild wash it down in sight of the congregation. The celebrant then slams the sacristy door and we all leave in silence. We prayerfully meditate on Jesus' crucifixion, which is what follows Maundy Thursday.
Nursery will be available in Lowndes Hall for children ages 5 and under.
