8:30 PM Great Vigil of Easter
Saturday, March 31, 2018, 8:30 PM - 10:30 PM
One of the most sacred liturgies of the year in the Church, the Great Vigil of Easter celebrates the resurrection of our Lord with the Service of Light, the Service of Lessons, Christian Initiation, and Holy Eucharist.
We begin the service in near darkness, but we light the new fire of Easter in our Columbarium Chapel and process with this fire into the nave, as a deacon chants the Exsultet--the great song of hope and rejoicing. We then read several scriptures and sing hymns.
The lights are all turned on and the congregation rings bells as we "ring in Easter" with the words "Alleluia, Christ is Risen!"
The Great Vigil of Easter is also the traditional time in the history of the Church for Christian baptism.
The Vigil continues with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
This joyful and festive service is one of the most powerful and impressive of the church year. Come join us!
Nursery will be available in Lowndes Hall for children ages 5 and under.
