10:30 AM - Palm Sunday Holy Eucharist, Rite II
Sunday, March 20, 2016, 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM
At the 10:30 AM service, we celebrate the "Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday," which is the traditional start of Holy Week in the church. All who would like to join in a "palm processional, first gather in the Parish Hall to receive palm branches. Others begin in the pews. We begin the liturgy by processing into the Nave waving the palm branches and reciting the "liturgy of the palms" from the Book of Common Prayer. This service then moves into our regular Holy Eucharist, Rite II, liturgy, from the Book of Common Prayer. It has more contemporary language in its prayers and responses. It is the largest service of our week in terms of attendance. At this liturgy, we have a full, vested choir, organist (and often other musicians as well singing and playing sacred music), and the clergy and acolytes wear vestments. At this Palm Sunday Service, at the time of the reading of the Gospel, several members of the congregation will stand at the front and read different "parts" from the passion narrative (the story of Jesus' crucifixion) from the Gospel of Mark. The congregation participates throughout the service through its responses and in singing the hymns. In addition, we celebrate Holy Eucharist (Holy Communion) at this service, in preparation for the rest of Holy Week.
