Ablutions:   the ritual washing of the clergy's hands before the liturgy of the table
     
Alms:   originally money or gifts in kind for the poor, now extended to mean gifts for any religious charitable purpose
     
Ambulatory:   the term usually applied to the space behind the altar, when there is room for people to walk around
     
Bishop:   a successor to the apostles; the ecclesiastical authority in the diocese
     
Candlemas:   an ancient name for the festival of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary (February 2nd);  tapers were blessed and carried in procession
     
Catechism:   a summary of Christian faith, in the form of question and answer
     
Catechumen:   one who is under instruction for Holy Baptism
     
Children's Chapel:   the children and a few adults and older youth that meet in the chapel for their own service at 10:30 then join their parents for the Children's Blessing and Eucharist
     
Collect:   a prayer that either introduces the lessons or summarizes the congregation's response to a situation
     
Colours, Liturgical:   in order to mark the various seasons, feasts, and festivals of the Church's year, different liturgical colours are used for the vestures of the church and the ministers
     
Deacon:   an order of the ordained ministry charged particularly with a servant role in behalf of those in need, and to assist bishops and priests in the proclamation of the Gospel and the administration of the Sacraments
     
Decalogue:   the ten commandments
     
Doxology:   an ascription of God's Glory
     
Easter:   the festival of the Resurrection of Christ; all movable feasts, Ascension Day, Whitsunday, Trinity Sunday, depend on Easter 
     
Epistle:   a letter or document in the New Testament usually attributed to an Apostle, a portion of an Epistle is read between the Collect and the Holy Gospel
     
Epistoler:   lay person that reads the Second Lesson, the Epistle, or the New Testament Reading
     
Eucharist:   Holy Communion
     
Eucharist Visitor:   trained and licensed lay person (may also include deacons) who take the consecrated bread and wine to the ill and shut in 
     
Evensong:   Sung or chanted Evening Prayer
     
Font:   the word means fount or spring, became general in churches in the sixth century; used for Holy Baptism
     
Fraction Anthem:   hymn sang at the Breaking of the Bread during the Holy Eucharist
     
Gathering of the Saints:   a group of parishioners that meet, usually at someone's home to share a meal and fellowship
     
Genuflexion:   a bending of the knee; a private devotion at certain times in public worship
     
Gospel:   The Good News of Jesus Christ; a passage from one of the Gospels is read at the Holy Eucharist
     
Holiday:   Holy day; a saint's day
     
Holy Spirit:   the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity
     
Holy Writ:   the Holy Scriptures
     
Lavabo:   a bowl used for ablutions
     
Lay Eucharist Minister:   lay person trained by the clergy and licensed by the Bishop to serve the wine during the Holy Eucharist; serves "behind the altar"
     
Lectern:   a stand that holds a book, usually the Bible
     
Lector:   lay person that reads the First Lesson or the Old Testament Reading
     
Liturgy:   a form of public worship 
     
Magnificat:   the first Latin word in the hymn of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St Luke i. 46), sung or said at Evening Prayer
     
Ministry:   gift of time, assets, or self to God and Church
     
Nave:   the body or people's part of the church from the door to the altar rail
     
Nicene:   from Nicaea, a town in Asia Minor, where a creed, which formed the basis of our Nicene Creed, was drawn up
     
Oblationer:   lay person(s) that brings the bread and wine forward from the back of the church for the Holy Eucharist
     
Parishioners:   members of this parish
     
Paschal Candle:   a candle blessed on Easter Eve and placed in the sanctuary through the day of Pentecost and at burials and baptisms
     
Prayer List:   is read during Prayers of the People during the service
     
Red-Letter Days:   days noted in the Calendar of the Book of Common Prayer for which proper Collects, Epistles, and Gospels are provided; 'feasts that are to be observed'
     
Retreat:   a time of rest and refreshment spent in devotional exercises usually under the direction of a priest
     
Sacraments:   an outward and visible sign of all inner and spiritual grace
     
Tabernacle:   a receptacle in which the Blessed Sacrament is reserved
     
Unction:   the anointing of the sick with holy oils accompanied by prayer
     
Venerable:   worthy of respect and veneration; in our diocese, a title given to an archdeacon
     
Vespers:   the canonical office for sunset
     
Vow:   a solemn promise
     
Vigil:   the eve of certain festivals
